We’re All Weird.

I remember and miss the walks into The Daily Scoop when John and I would talk about our days and often one of us would conclude that We’re All Weird. When I first went to NUS High, I thought it (being weird) a bad thing, but as the years past, I came to appreciate everybody’s little oddities and idiosyncrasies. In fact, now, sometimes I gotta say I find it hard to be around people who are not comfortable with being their own unique selves, and constantly feel the need to fit in. I worry I am becoming that way.

Mao got back two days ago and it was just awesome speaking to her in person again. Together we went to get Yiwei from the airport yesterday, and came home to help Yiwei unpack and settle. Mao ended up staying the night and we spent the day out together. It was just… liberating… to not have to watch what you say, because these people have already seen you at your worst (and best).

It is just the best feeling in the world when you go shopping with your fellow 19-year-old friend for a pair of Heelys, and realise that it is not classified under sports shoes, but rather children’s shoes. It is uplifting to laugh when the sales lady can’t help but laugh at the three grown kids deciding which heelys would best suit campus at the University of Illinois.

I love all the best friends I’ve had all my life. Some days I feel quite alone, but there are other days when I find I am luckier than most people, because I have so many (quite a relative word) people I trust and can run to. They don’t know one another, but I love them all and am awfully thankful for all their presences in my life.

College.

I must say that a year ago, I never envisioned my college experience would turn out the way it did. Stunning how much has changed since then, how much I have changed. Had what was possibly the worst lecture I had since it all started.

Today I (the class) was told flat out by a professor that as a student, “your job is to study”. Funny how one professor tells us that learning is more important than studying, and another insist that the one and only thing a student should concern themselves with is study. Funny also that he gives the example of how the knowledge would equip you with the ability to make the diagnosis. Funnier still that we are on the other hand constantly told that in this profession that we have chosen, we have to constantly remind ourselves of the people we will come out serving. I wonder why I think of House when the entire thing was happening.

The university has definitely lived up to my expectations of being a place where there is huge emphasis on the academic ability, or worse yet, a test of the memory space of the hard disk we are all endowed with. It has also lived up to my expectations of being a place of zero intellectual growth for the moment. Perhaps like my high school experience, it will teach me life lessons through countless negative examples, but for the moment, it is becoming difficult to block out “what if”s.

Sigh. Study I shall. Since that is my job as a student.

I wonder if anybody still reads this thing. From the last time I was here till now, the layout of this thing has changed quite abit.

I guess it comes as no surprise that my life has changed quite drastically as well.

What a strange family I’ve got. My brother who has just finished what is possibly the toughest exam of his life, comes home after the paper and spends the next day at Borders looking for books. I love my family. (:
